Robin Chase founded Zipcar, the world’s
biggest car-sharing business.
That was one of her smaller ideas. Here she travels much farther,
contemplating road-pricing schemes that will shake up our driving habits
and a mesh network vast as the Interstate.

Hey All,

Do you all think this sort of road tolling is a worthwhile concept? I tend
associate toll roads and "market solutions" with privatization (which
initiates my gag reflex), but I think Robin Chase has some interesting ideas
about changing the transportation infrastructure like replacing petrol tax as
the income sources for municipal roads with a road use fee. Having the state
rely on taxing fossil fuels or pollution other wise will further entrench the
use of the those energy sources. I do think we need tax the hell out of
fossil fuels in the here and now but in a non-regressive manner, ala' James
Hansen's Carbon Tax-&-Dividend proposal, or something with a similarly broad
appeal (appealing to folks ecological concerns, mistrust of government, &
pocket books).

Hi James, or anyone with a 'take' on this.

Here is my little question:

Do you think we have overstepped the bounds of what is habitable space on
earth?
Are we trying to live in too many places that are not supportive enough of
life?

Frances
