How about chicken tractors? Biofuels diminish the soil fertility as all
fertility is exported to make fuel, same with building materials. At least
with chickens you leave behind the manure to help replenish what is lost
through grazing.

Subject: [permaculture] Growing Along Highway Margins
Hello Everyone,
I recently had the opportunity to meet with a city official out here in
Portland, Oregon who is trying to use the land along city highways to grow
biofuels and/or building materials. This official asked me to think through
additional ideas this land could be used for. Does anyone have any other
ideas that the land could be used for? Keep in mind that the idea is to
promote Portland as a sustainable city in a visually appealing manner. Our
climate out her is USDA zone 8 and we have very wet mild winters and very
dry summers. Also, if biofuels are the way to go, which ones are actually
worth growing? Any ideas for building materials would also be greatly
appreciated (we have thought of bamboo, but need specific species that work
well for building and will grow in our climate).
Thanks for your help,
Chris Randolph
