Another book to check out is Guns, Germs and Steel. Jared Diamond discusses this subject a bit, but, I believe, doesn't give exact numbers. There are gobs of references so perhaps they may get you closer to your answer.
Please publish what you find to this list.
Thanks,
Todd

I have never seen that figure.? However, check out Tending The Wild By M. Kat Anderson.? Professor Anderson includes some figures on populations in pre-contact times in California that may be a clue and the book has an extensive bibliography that may point you in the right direction.? It is a brilliant book on the land management techniques of California's first people.? Her knowledge of the lifestyle of these people is profound.? I also think you can't answer the question in terms of how?much land an individual needed, the land required a community to both exploit and manage the land in a sustainable way.?
The native peoples were doing a lot?to make sure that the land sustainably and ensure that their were adequate quantities of animals and plants for their needs..

Hello Everyone,
I am wondering if anyone knows of research into how many acres of land
in a particular bio-region are needed to support a human in a hunter
gatherer type lifestyle. For example, how many acres would you need in
the Edwards Plateau country to support a human foraging on prickly pear,
rabbits, deer, etc. Chihuahua desert? Sierra Nevada Fir Forests?
Pacific NW Douglas Fir forests areas? NJ Pine Barrens? Eastern
Decidous Hickery/Oak? Anywhere the ecology has been fairly well defined.
Any thoughts?
Marjory
