I recently took a great permaculture class with Mark Shepard, who
explained that when growing a LOT of trees, to be able to sell nuts or fruit,
permaculturists plant them in rows. However, each tree still gets
permaculture
underplantings. Comfrey and daffodils around the apples, for instance.
For families just growing for themselves, he explained, the Edible
Forest Gardens books are the bible. These plantings mimic the patterns of
natural
forests. Takes more time.
