There is an agriculture experiment station bulletin --
either Univ of Missouri or West Virginia Univ -- that
specifically addresses the species of plants that grow
under and around eastern black walnut trees, with respect
to tolerance to juglone, the walnut chemical that is
allelopathic to certain other plants such as nightshades.
Missouri is home to the largest black walnut nut
processor in the world. Eastern black walnut trees
grow all through the Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas.
Goldenrods, fescue, ferns, and a bunch of other plants grow
around black walnut trees in a natural setting.
"Something to Grow On", April 2001, an ornamental horticulture
newsletter from Auburn Univ, has an article on the walnut
tree. It provides a list of tolerant trees, shrubs,
groundcovers, and flowers tolerant of juglone..... and cites
the following agricultural experiment station bulletin
from WVU.... in 1951... the likely bulletin.

Brooks, M. G. 1951. Effect of black walnut trees and their products
on other vegetation. Bulletin 347, West Virginia University,
Agricultural Experiment Station, Morgantown, WV.
