Even in Africa, just like everywhere else, low-input, high-output,
high-quality sustainable farming requires little or nothing that the
farmer cannot provide for himself or from within the local community.
That's always been the main "obstacle" to sustainable farming, that
it's so difficult for outsiders to make money out of it because the
farmers don't need outsiders, nor their "only" solutions.

No shortage of evidence, eg:

"Reducing Food Poverty with Sustainable Agriculture: A Summary of New
Evidence" Centre for Environment and Society, University of Essex
http://www.essex.ac.uk/ces/esu/occasionalpapers/SAFErepSUBHEADS.shtm

"47 Portraits of Sustainable Agriculture Projects and Initiatives"
Centre for Environment and Society, University of Essex
http://www.essex.ac.uk/ces/research/susag/safew47casessusag.shtm

Much more here:

... and in many other places on the Net, including the SANET archives.

I suggest you do some homework.

Best wishes

Hi

I would like to add some points from the view point of sustainable agriculture.

As land is brought under cultivation (and with the use of chemical fertilizers) the soil organic carbon starts depleting rapidly.
This makes farming activity more costly and unsustainable.
The rate of depletion of organic carbon is very high in African countries.
Thus the lands here will degrade rapidly (with the existing farming system), and will lead to the next economic problem.

The only solution to this is use of high tech biotechnology based products, that minimize the dependence on chemical fertilizers and improve the soil organic carbon.
We have a proven package of such products, which was acclaimed as "the best sustainable technology developed by SME in India" by New Ventures co founded by USAID, WOrld Resource Institute, CII, and GBC.
