I eat prickly pear all the time. To harvest the ears
and to cut the spines off I use knife and tongs.

The tunas (fruits) make decent wine (which comes out
the most festive magenta color). When making wine, I
don't worry about the spines; they seem to soften or
dissolve or something in the fermentation process.

I have a friend who makes juice with the tunas; he
uses a juicer and allegedly the juicer takes care of
the spines.

I like to eat the tunas as-is. Hold the fruit with
tongs and cut the skin/spines off with a knife.

Prickly pear ROCKS. A rampantly wild-growing, highly
nutritious, wide-ranging bioregional treat.
