The email address for those interested in contacting Sarah Southall in India is

worldfraternity@rediffmail.com

Thanks for pointing out the address wasnt forwarded as part of the email Darren, sorry about that.

Rick's due back from Aceh in 2 weeks, not sure what Cam's plans are, I think he may work a bit longer on the Bali project that IDEP are establishing.

Havent had a lot of contact, but the project and training seem to have gone well, with 12 aid agencies approaching them to find out what they are doing that is so successful in rebuilding after the tsunami, and Rick is running a workshop for a number of aid agencies on the permaculture approach to sustainable aid, so it seems to be taking off.

Paul, Can you tell us more about what your son is doing uncolleging? I have
one who has so far traveled around the world twice on a shoestring,
volunteering. I have a hard time letting go of thinking they need a degree.

Hi Naomi,
My name is Sarah and I am from the Mornington Peninsula, but living in India in Gujerat in a rural town. We have problems with sal affected land here and I am researching different ways we might be able to slow the degredation and increase the regeneration.

I read a bio about you on the permaculture international website and wondered if you have any digital info on working with salt affected land you could send me?? Here we are at the start of wet season and there are no trees to soak up the water, it just lies about. It is very flat land. we drove the other night for a couple of hours and the scenery was all the same. a tree here and there, but just flat paddocks. I am interested in sustainable ag. but I havent done a permaculture course, I do know that people all over the world need access to the wisdom of pc. I was happy to read that you and your husband have been teaching all over the world - congratulations! what a wonderful thing to be involved in.

I am currently studying with a good friend under a guru in a town 100km from Ahmedabad in Gujerat. We have purchased some land for a new school and ashram, animal shelter and orphanage. we are keen to have some lush gardens, fruit trees and vegies. We want to teach the kids about sustainable use of the land as well as show locals what can be done here. When Bill and geoff Lawton put on that Melbourne Uni course recently my friend helped organise it and I met some wonderful people from around the world. Do you have contacts in India you could put me in touch with. I need to have a chat to someone about what projects have been undertaken and what succeses and failures have come about.

Our organisation is committed to achieving a worldwide fraternity of people working in harmony with man and nature. We are starting to call now for people from all over the world to come and work with us on many community projects and at the same time work on themselves and their own spiritual development. We will also be starting some projects in Australia in the coming years which is exciting! We are not religious but definitely spiritual. If by chance you know anyone who is thinking of coming to india let them know about us as we have enough resources to cover for many people's needs - feel free to pas on this email address. We will be starting the building of the school and ashram after the rains in oct/nov. but people are welcome anytime.

I trust this email finds you happy and well.
I look forward to hearing back from you and finding out if you have any information or contacts that might be of help to this project.
Cheers,
Sarah Southall

Hi Kathy,
I'm the one who mentioned uncolleging. I figured it best to ask. My
son's reply below.

Kathyann

What is uncolleging? It's life.

Uncolleging is putting yourself in situations to find your talents, and
what you love to do, or continuing that process if you've unschooled.
It's surrounding yourself with skill-building opportunities, and honing
skills. It's periodically checking in with yourself (or a mentor) to see
that what you are doing is somehow related to your lifelong dreams and
goals. It's remembering to document what you do so that when you're
"done" with "college" you have a work history or resume that can put any
college transcript or degree to shame. You don't have to wait till
you've graduated to do what you want, you just have to find out what you
actually want, and how to do it.

That's the quick and dirty of my current impression of it.

Steve, you are so right. My one who went around the world is a girl, now 22. Shoestring was not edible, she paid for ticket and the rest was WWOOFing, Willing Workers on Organic Farms, room and board for labor. Now she and boyfriend want to buy land (college money from grandparents) and learn permaculture and start a WWOOF farm themselves. All her great grandparents, all four grandparents, both parents, all have lotsa college so everyone raises eyebrows at this smart kid not going to school. Smarter than the rest of us, maybe. The point you make is almost painful...how much have we/I forgotten, how can I keep learning from nature, what good are all the degrees if you have to get in a car and burn oil every time you're hungry or thirsty. Kathyann, thank you SO much for asking your son and sending his reply. Geez, I think if Micaela just wrote down what she's been up to, yes, it would be a heckuva transcript. In the Himalayas on second trip one day they realized no shelter woul
d be available that night so the boyfriend built something out of rocks and sticks and debris that kept 6 adults warm and dry through a rainy snowy night. He didn't learn that in college, and he went; also knows primitive skills. Regardng the post about permaculture in India, I would like contact info for that gal, for future reference, for next daughter who wants to go around the world "blowing" her college money. Kathy
