G'day Larry,
The Garmin GPS I use has an accuracy of at best 3-5m. To increase this you need to use a antenna (one of those back pack jobs) and subscribe to a terrestrial beacon (Differential GPS or DGPS). This way you can get down <1m. For further accuracy (eg. 20cm) you need to use set up an on site beacon. For most site analysis purposes however the standard accuracy does the job. If you need greater accuracy then get a surveyor in and use a Total Station (mm accurate).
Ciao,

Using a Garmin GPS you would transfer the points to your computer using MAPSOURCE software. Basically you merge your waypoints with computer based topo maps after waypoints are plotted by the GPS. I would imagine that other manufacturers use similar maps and methods.
I've made GPS based trails and feature maps of my farm this way.

What kind of resolution can you get and can you make useful printoits on a
11X17
hires printer? For purposes of generating a features map of your property
(landforms, trees, gardens, water features, etc.) can you generate data that
translates to
1/8" = 1' scale for aprinted image? Can you enter any text data or images that are linked to GPS coordinates?
