Robert....

Map. Map. Map.

Do a base map with contours.
Do some overlays of sector and zone considerations.
Then start working with the terrain effects for water flow and keyline
strategies.
After that, you can start doing some design work.

These are the kinds of skills you can pick up from a good PC course. I found
that a couple classes in Landscape Architecture can really help, too.
