are these trees Nitrogen fixers ?

Paulownias grew like the weeds they are in the Piedmont (central) and
Coastal Plains of North Carolina. I was under the impression that the wood
was a favorite for coffins in Japan. It is my observation that they like
cool and very moist temperate conditions. During the spring, the ground
beneath the trees is littered with purple bells that are the fallen
blossoms. I also noticed when they sustained wind damage, the cracked wood
did not rot rapidly at all, as would be expected from a fast growing, thin
celled wood. Paulownias are being looked at for restoration of NC coastal
land played out by cotton and hog farming.

Hard to tell why he thinks there's no demand, so no one will grow them, when there's a big demand for the wood, which can be harvested as early as
six years, and they are widely grown. We interplanted 100 with chestnuts,
about 2 miles back from the ocean 30 miles south of San Francisco. Even on
careful drip irrigaiton (they don't like getting their feet wet), about half
died and none grew the advertised six feet or more a year. They don't like
wind, which we have in spades. I wouldn't plant them again, except in a
very warm, well-drained, wind-protected area.
