Re: Loren's - ">Crikeys Kirby. Can you really read all that without taking a
breath?!? Your grammar checker must love you.
I'm having difficulty figuring out whether you are attempting to be humorous,
or just can't disagree with people without insulting them."
Hi Loren,
Thanks for your help in clarifying my communication style. You did send this
to me in an offlist email. But since it suggested that I had insulted and
behaved rudely towards members of this list, I felt more comfortable with
addressing the matter openly. I hope you don't mind.
My comments to Kirby were intended as spoken in a jocular or bantering tone.
I felt that I had indicated this by telling a tale against myself and my
computer accusing me of using bad grammar. (Which is probably true!) The rest
of the post had continued in conversational manner describing a novel I was
currently reading. Again, this banter was intended to suggest a friendly
manner towards Kirby.
I do unreservedly apologise to Kirby, yourself, and anyone else who felt I
was being rude or disrespectful of Kirby. Quite unintended if that seemed so.
"I for one would be more likely to consider your viewpoints as valid if you
could express disagreements with people in a polite, rational way."
The converse of this being the assertion that I have been responding in an
impolite and irrational way. Again, I unreservedly apologise to all list
members if I appeared to have been behaving rudely and irrationally.
I had felt that I'd always been quite careful to address issues, ideas, and
assertions, rather than attack, villify, or demean individuals. In my
writings, I attempt to clearly differentiate between ideas and people. By
your suggestion, I have failed.
Critiquing ideas or noting possible contradictions is a valid part of
dialogue and debate. Haranguing, harrassing or putting down the personal
character of the one who expresses those ideas is not okay.
If that is what I seem to have done, then again, I unreservedly apologise. It
has never been my intention to do so. If, at any time, I felt my ability to
express myself was becoming so woeful and inept so as to continue (as you
suggest) to offend people, I would unhesitatingly withdraw immediately from
any further postings.
(see how bad my grammar is, I often indulge in these complex sentences. Duh!)
I would, however, continue to read posts here as I have done for several
years. Loren, thank you again for your feedback. I appreciate your interest
and assistance.
