The donks don't eat pumpkin (or iris...but practically everything else) and the pumpkin vines outgrow the thistles and smother them to death.

Thanks Janet! That's similar to what I've worked out with just a human with gloves and kama and no donk.
A burro definitely sits high on my list of animals to have.
Iris definitely seem to be a weed of grazing. Brings to mind schemes of flower production.
