I have always brought combustion air in from the outside in an under floor pipe to the front of the wood stove or fireplace. The reason was that rather than using warmed indoor air for combustion I was using outdoor air, and thereby saving energy.

This is standard practice and another good reason to do it this wy is to
avoid oxygen depeltion in you living space. In a closed house during cold
weather
when the stove is burning a lot of fuel you need an external supply of oxygen.
