g'day michael,

all the latest info on treated timber is that it is not to be used. i have heard of the charring idea as well but never tried it. there is a wood preservative here in australai made from lanolin don't know how that would go, as in the open air it needs re-application.

you could also use rocks or those cement building blocks, i have used roofing metal from the demolition yards (more recycling), see my page on how i did my gardens:
