10 DAY HANDS-ON ART OF NATURAL BUILDING COURSE
Learn how to build beautifully crafted, long-lasting, non-toxic, energy
efficient dwellings with all local and natural materials.
SEPTEMBER 6-15, 2002
ASHEVILLE, NC, USA

Join Kleiwerks Natural Building and SouthEast Ecological Design in the late
summer lushness of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Through hands-on
practices, demonstrations, classes, slideshows, discussions and fun you will
learn how to build your own earthen home from start to finish. Our main
project will be the construction of a small cottage at Kevin's permaculture
place, a small homestead just outside of Asheville, NC. We will also get to
tour some of the area's clay and straw structures including Asheville's
first cob dwelling, Dancing Dragonfly's strawclay and cob pottery studio and
Earthaven Ecovillage's passive solar buildings.

In this course you will learn a range of techniques including:
*Adobe
*Cob
*Strawclay
*Earthen Plaster
*Clay-based Milk Paint
*Bamboo
*Thatch
*Stone

You will also learn about:
*Identifying & mixing materials
*Hand-sculpting built-in furniture, niches, arches & relief
*Installing windows & doors
*Drainage & foundations
*Whole-systems & passive solar design
*Sustainable forestry
*Codes & permits

INSTRUCTORS: Janell Kapoor, Mollie Curry, Kevin Ward, Michel Spaan and other
special guests.

FEE: Includes delicious meals, camping and tuition. $675 for 1 person; $625
each for 2 people; $575 each for 3 or more. Some partial barter and work
trade is available; some partial scholarships are available for people of
color. Early registration is encouraged.

and a $250 non-refundable deposit per person to:
