According to Funk and Wagnalls copyright 1947:
Luddite--One of a band of workmen who organized to raise riots for the
destruction of machinery (1811-1816): so named after Ned Lud, a
feeble-minded mechanic who destroyed several stocking-frames.
Partner says that it is generally used to mock people who don't keep up
with modern technology.
