Yeah. The trouble is, then you get people telling you that permaculture is
"all theory" and demanding to see some concrete
data/examples/recipes/whatever. If you don't provide these, everything you
say is dismissed as "impractical", or your level of "real world" experience
is questioned.

I think it's good to provide examples, but it must be made really that these
are not "recipes" to be slavishly followed. A counterexample should
probably be given for each example, in order to demonstrate how your own
example may not work in a different situation.
