Hola a todos

This whole discussion has been great. Lots of thoughts and ideas coming
up. I am enjoying all of it, especially the comments by Toby Hemenway.

I have started taking a similar stance, in talks and discussions. Many
people see a "sustainable lifestyle" as means having to go without of
lots of things. I have started saying "no, I am into sustainability
because I want MORE, and I have the right to MORE". I don't want more
health insurance, I want real health, in the form of safe food to eat. I
want clean air to breath. I don't want more police in the streets
(especially here in Mexico!!!) I want real the security which comes from
a just society. I want a real quality of life, not a smog-ridden
rat-race of a life. I want more of everything that is real and
wholesome.

This message is a little hard to present to people who struggle day to
day to get enough of anything to eat - although in these cultures they
often have many of the other things (strong sense of community....) -
but there is a whole, very large part of Mexico that is seduced by the
"American dream", and see the good life as more consumer goods. So, I
have been talking in private universities etc and trying to challenge
them to see what is happening, and start demanding a better quality of
life for all Mexicans - as distinct from just more CD players, a closer
McDonalds outlet........

Gracias a todos
Skye
