When I read Lancelot, I see Percy as Percival and Foote as Lancelot.  Foote as the hard-edged, passionate gnostic; Percy as the burned out sinner-saint, quietly arguing with him.  Either way, the background of the friendship between the two men in the novel struck me, especially after reading the letters, as a fictionalized image of the friendship between Percy and Foote.  I was surprised neither of the Percy biographies commented on the possible connection.

I agree regarding hearing (and seeing) Foote, as you can in the Ken Burns piece.  I know a h.s. history teacher who uses parts of the Burns in teaching the War.  She says the students are always most enthralled with Foote, and will ask about him.

When I read LANCELOT, I see Foote when I imagine Percival--anyone else do the same?

Enjoyed reading the latest "chat" about Foote. Hey, if anyone has heard him
speak in person or even seen the Ken Burns "Civil War" series on PBS, he is
wonderful to "hear" - for those of us from the South, he truly is like the
neighbor next door or if you are not from the South, his diction, "accent"
etc should be enthralling to you, I would hope.

Maybe the nicest combination would be to have an audiobook of his novels,
narrated by him.
