David, It is called an after-swarm. The prime swarm leaves with the old queen. If the hive is still populous, a virgin queen can emerge and leave with another swarm. This year I caught three swarms (one prime and two after-swarms) from one hive. Each swarm happened a week or so apart. ~Todd From: David DiGiuseppe <david AT daviddg.com> Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2012 22:13:25 -0400 To: <ocba AT lists.ibiblio.org> Subject: [ocba] two swarms question Hi all, My hive swarmed about 2 weeks ago. (Not to my surprise--I'd been too stinkin' busy to keep up with them.) The same hive swarmed again this morning. This one caught me by surprise. Sadly, like the last time, the swarm is on a branch about 50 feet high. (Anyone have a sky-hook?) My question--is it odd that the same hive would swarm twice in 2 weeks? ----- ------ ----- ----- David D |
