I think this illustrates the point that just because sugar is cheaper than honey at retail doesn't mean it makes sense for the hobbyist to harvest as much as possible and feed it back in sugar. I'm a hobbyist and I try to harvest the surplus, the amount in excess of what bees need to survive without any "feeding season". Last year I only fed one second-year hive, and that was after they split just before the dearth and depleted all their stores.
If you are having to feed an established hive, then I think you might be better off harvesting less this year. Freezing a super-full is great if you have got the space.
