Hi Charles,
You make some very good points and I agree with many. I'd like to submit
that grafting is used to create clones of a particular variety, not
necessarly superior trees. In commercial orchard applications to get around
problems
like Nematode infected soil, heavy clay soils when growing Prunus and many
more examples you are fimilar with.
When a grower with limited back yard space doesn't want to lose production
time planting a few seeds of a desired fruit only to learn they don't have
the charastics he desires, the best bet is plant trees grafted to desirable
varieties.
