Charles,
Is the reason the grafted trees died due to lessor winter survivability of
the rootstock (less winter hardy understock) or the act of having been
grafted?
I have grafted several hundred persimmon (D. virginiana) and our temps
sometimes drop to -15 and I have seen no greater die back on the grafted
trees.
I've not had a problem with die back on grafted nut trees.
May I submit your conclusion of dying due to grafting may be prejudices
against grafting when the real reason is weak understock?
Incompatibility in chestnuts is a real problem. Dr. Sandra Anagnostakis has
researched and published that. But the die back isn't due to the act of
grafting, rather grafting of two distinctive incompatible types.
