For some of us (referring to an area in the mountains of Montana), the issue
is how to get rid of lily of the valley-- they spread too much.

They are also poisonous. "All parts of the plant are poisonous and the red
berries may be attractive to children; if eaten even in small amounts, the
plant can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and a reduced heart rate." --
check the Wiki article on them with its long list of glycosides.

Try transplanting when they are not flowering. In the summer, after all the
flowers have disappeared. Or, early in the spring when the new shoots are
just breaking the soil. Keep watered & weeded the first year.

several times and they never took off. They are in light shade and the soil
has been fertilized with horse manure but it started out as forrest soil
under trees. Any suggestions as to how to get them to grow?
