I bought a cherry pitter (Canadian terminology) or a Cherry stoner (American
terminology.... insert the druggie joke here) from Berry Hill Ltd at this
link: http://www.berryhilllimited.com/b-cart/Product.asp?pid=7162182&cat=93
and this link shows what mine looks like.  It could use some redesigning in
the pit collection department, but this pitter is light years faster than
anything else on the market.... unless you get one of those commercial ones
like on the U of S website!  I love it, worth every penny and I have pitted
gallons with it.  BTW I can easily and comfortably pit about 5-6 gallons an
hour, those plunger pitters do about 1 gallon an hour if you're going flat
out.

The manufacturer is actually these guys down in the States:
http://www.sausagemaker.com/32184cherrystoner.aspx and they have the stoner
on sale right now.  They have updated the pitter since I bought mine and show
the new one at this link.  I like the look of the feed and pit catcher
changes, but I can't say how well the new version would work for our
cherries.  I'm a bit concerned because they said that they changed things to
make it easier to pit giant Bings (which mine doesn't like very much) which
might mean that it won't do as good a job on the smaller U of S cherries. On
the other hand, I'm guessing what they changed is the rubber gaskets which
you must be able to replace with something of your own with a bit of work.  I
think it would be worth trying one out anyway.

I've pitted nankings (after cooking them a bit) with a foley food mill before
making jam out of them.  You have to be a bit careful not to crush the seeds
thru the screen, but I really hate making jelly and throwing out half my
cherries as pulp waste.

I expect to have some Carmine Jewel cherries next year and in the years to
come.

What types and brands of cherry pitters have worked well for people?

I may end up with some Nanking Cherries as well.  Can they be pitted?

Dan

I'm not sure what you consider upper Midwest, but the entire state of
Michigan at least has been plenty wet enough all summer and fall. Just
got 1.5 inches of rain yesterday and there is a flood advisory. I
don't have numbers like Jerry does, but I'd guess we're around 20%
over an average year on water. Luckily, the only time there was too
too much was in April.
