- Subject: [NAFEX] Asian pear Roostocks
- Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2011 23:30:26 -0500 (EST)
Group:
1. Is it true that P. betulifolia is a better (dwarf) rootstock for Asian
pear (P. serotina) then the OHxF series? I'm confused because a certain
nursery says its the choice rootstock for Asian pears; but then they have
options for Asian pear on both P. betulifolia and, alternately, the same
varieties (in some cases) also on an OHxF roostock. Why would anyone want to
choose an Asian pear to be grafted on an OHxF if it supposedly the case that
the rootstock of choice is P. betulifolia?
2. What rootstock should be used if multi-grafting a pear so that the frame
(above the roostock) is European pear (P. communis) and the top portion of
the limbs are varieties of Asian pear? The OHxF series in this case?
The conditions:
Well-drained soil; irrigation available; small space - needs to be dwarfing
to around 15 to 20' if unmanaged.
Thanks,
Steve; NJ 6b/7a
