Steve,

I don't understand this "grainy texture" description. Are you sure you have
a Juhl/Yates? I'd never describe either my Juhl or Yates trees as grainy. I
have Yates from Ed Yates and Juhl form Claypool who got it from the nursery
in Linton, IN, the same nursery where Ed told me he gotten several Juhl
trees. Juhl/Yates is early, soft, large, sweet and full of black material.
Never what I'd describe as grainy.

David,
I never had a real grafting knive... I use the sort of utility knive that
we use to do things such as cutting gypsum boards - these have replacable
blades that have a triangular shape. When grating season starts, I put a
new blade in and I am set for the season... Inexpensive and it works well.
Honestly, I don't think it is that important that the blade is sharpened
only on one side.
