Sarah, I would think paw paws would do OK there. I think your problems might
be mostly winter wind and summer dry. If you have a sheltered spot where you
can irrigate with rich soil, they should do OK. I imagine in the prairies
you would get enough heat and sun to ripen them.
My main problems here have been lack of water, competition with grass, and
they don't like cold drying winds. They do much better at my parents house
in the same zone, where they have extremely rich soil with tons of moisture
and excellent wind buffers. We also get a lot of clouds in Michigan, and it
can be relatively cool in summer. 70's with some 80's and some 90's seems
normal.
