Michele,=A0 I agree with Betsy.=A0 I'm struggling here in zone 5 to establi=
sh a tree.=A0 I've lost about 6 over the last decade, but did harvest a few=
fruits over the years.=A0 They ripen here in October, which is a good time=
to be harvesting fruit as most of what I grow is done by then.

I intend to keep trying.=A0 A few years ago, I tried to locate some seeds f=
rom trees being grown in cooler zones, the idea being to try to establish s=
eedling on their own roots.

You should be able to grow them in zone 6 without too many problems.

John

Che-- how does it taste?=A0 Is it worth growing?
What is your favorite use of the fruit?

I remember trying one years ago, and it was insipid.
Maybe the one I tried was not representative.

Michele,

To my taste it is mildly sweet, pleasant. Kind of a watermelon flavor.
Strange, rough external texture, similar to a peach.=A0 Not as good a
flavor as its relatives mulberry and fig.

I like that it is a decent sized fruit (very large grape-sized), pest
free (so far), undemanding culture, seedless, different. I have only
eaten my few fruits fresh off the tree. However, I plan to try drying,
preserving it, etc. it to see if I can intensify the flavor.=A0 Hopefully
I will get more fruit this year and will be able to explore in the
kitchen!

Betsy

I had a bunch of Southern Queen eating pears.....very good, sweet, soft
eating pear.....very juicy too.
I peeled and cored them, sliced and put in fruit dehydrator. Dried them
until soft and leathery.
These tasted like candy they were so sweet. Very good. Best dried stuff I
ever did.
Needless to say, I now have Southern Queen coming along nicely here and
hopefully, some pears this year.
Good Luck
Pete: Z8, South MS
