There is variation in the flavor of the berries. I grow four kinds: a wild
Amelanchier alnifolia which took 5 years to fruit, a Jennybell which fruited
in 3 years, the Timm and Success from the old Bear Creek nursery (now gone)
which fruited heavily in their 2nd year on plants that were about 6 inches
high and one called Success (I was trying to find more of the Timm and
Success) which is much taller than the Bear Creek ones and fruited in their
2nd or 3rd year but more sparsely.

I tasted some berries from a Mexico serviceberry in a botanic garden near me
and did not like the flavor at all. Mine vary from mild to stronger flavor
and the flavor also varies with the degree of ripeness. The ones I pick in
Montana from 3-20 foot tall bushes are different yet in flavor.

I am in zone 9 b (average lows of 25-30 although once in a rare while we
have gotten down to 18 for a week at a time.

http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=AMELA this shows them native to
all of the US and Canada with maps showing particular plant species.

As the article below from Dr.Chiranjit Parmar stated, there have been some
named varieties for a long time. It is hard to find these in catalogues but
the wild forms can be found at native plants sales
