Hi Michael
we are in Northeast NC, borderline zone 8A--but we have a semi-shady area, near a swampy woodland.
please encourage your boss!

No need to nag your boss when he could be breeding new blackberries.
The new blackberry that intrigues me is 'Black Pearl' which is supposedly hardy to zone 6, so I might try to pamper it here in zone 5 NY. I finally tasted some marionberry jam and thought, "Oh! That's what blackberries are supposed to taste like!" I never saw the point of blackberries before, but now I'd like something with marionberry-like flavor.

Amy,Wild treasure is a cross between the thorny wild trailing blackberry here on the west coast (Rubus ursinus) and the thornless trailing cultivar 'Waldo'. The fruit are small, but it has much better flavor than 'Chester' (which isn't all that hard, really) and has an earlier season as well. My boss named and released the variety so I am very familiar with it and will bug him on Monday for a PDF copy of the release notice, which has all the info on it.
You didn't mention where on the east coast you are and that will make quite a difference on how it performs for you...Michael
