I'm within spitting distance of Lake Saint Clair and were there local
pawpaws (beside my own) I'd know about them.

That sounds about right. I know of 3 wild populations, 2 are near Ann
Arbor, and another west of Grand Rapids in a beautiful floodplain.
Never seen fruit or flowers on any of them, they are all growing in
quite a bit of shade. Of course I haven't always been there at the
right time.
