Steve,

I've got 3 different types of U of S cherries (Carmine Jewel, Crimson Passion and Juliet I think ) and none of them show any signs of suckering.

I also bought mine small and they have filled out very quickly (having reached 5ft or so within 2 years). So I would plant small and get harvesting sooner (my Carmine Jewel had a crop every year since planting and this year (year 3 or 4) is a bumper!).

Interesting to hear about your plums suckering, I only have a european plum and it doesn't seem to be a problem as yet.

Good luck,

Howdy all,

I am looking for a rootstock for Japanese-American hybrid plums that doesn't sucker.

My plums are all on Prunus americana, the standard plum rootstock for here "up North".  They sucker like the dickens and I'm tired of it.  I'd like to plant a few more plums without having to "go a-sucker-pullin" for the rest of my life.  Suckers pop up as far as 50 feet away from the trees.  If the entire area was mowed that wouldn't be a big deal, but the grow into other beds and pulling them there results in mulch disturbance that causes weed seed germination.

Evans sour cherry also suckers terribly.  Although my Evans has been a pretty good performer for the past ten years it's got trunk damage from a tree stake that was set to close and I'm going to have to take it out one of these days.  I'll replace it with a couple of the University of Saskatchewan cherries when young trees become available that are more than 2" high.  From the U. of S. website I gather that several of the most widely distributed cultivars are "suckerless".

Most 'Fuji' apples require a long growing season to ripen. Van Well does have a few strains that ripen a month or so sooner. Check their website.

Have you any experience with 'Honeycrisp' and 'Jonagold'. I find them very comparable in quality to 'Fuji'.
