Regarding Stratification especially of hybrid cherries see the attached.

In addition to the attached I'd say the most common problem with stratifying
is getting the seeds too wet.
My general rule is to soak potting mix (or peat moss) thoroughly, wring out
all the water, then add 2x times more dry peat moss and mix.
The seeds should have been soaked overnight in water before adding.

For hybrids seeds (especially hybrids between wild and cultivated plants)
Patterson's bury method works much better than the refrigerator. The hybrid
seeds each can have different seed dormancy genes. When we have stratified
Carmine Jewel and similar hybrid cherry seeds in a fridge, we had
germination happening about 10% every month for 5 months! What a pain to
keep checking all the time. It you leave them too long they get lanky and
rot. But the outdoor bury method seems to keep them in check. When you dig
them up in spring they germinate all at once.

But keep in mind that Patterson method was for Saskatchewan. Warmer areas
probably don't have to bury as deep.

We now do most of our stratification for our breeding program using the bury
method.

Matt, where in SE michigan are ya?

What did the carmine Jewell cherry seeds you grew grow into (and please
don't say cherry trees/bushes)? Have they fruited for you?

Lastly, where did you (and Ernest) get the seeds from?

Ernest, mine germinated after 3-4 months of cold after moving to a 60
degree environment. Some were even germinating in the fridge, however
others took several weeks to a month to germinate after being moved to
warmth. Also, the germination rate was not high. Perhaps they are not
terribly fertile because of their origin as intergeneric hybrids. So
far I'd say I've got about 25% germ.

I'd like to report that my honeyberry seeds are now germinating en
masse. hundreds of them, germinating after about 3 months cold, 1
month warm. I'm curious to experiment with fresh seed.
