You observations on the Badgersett hazels are of considerable interest to me
since I am stratifying some Badgersett hazelnuts and hybrid chestnuts at this
very moment. I hope they grow more lustily for me than they have for you. --

I grow several generations of the Rutter hazelnuts. The Rutter
Hazelburts from Bear Creek that I got in the early 90s still seem to
be the most consistent bearers, seedlings of the parent plants usually
put on nuts by the third year. The most recent round of Rutter stock
was planted in 2002 & bore nuts for the first time last year....
There is huge variation in that planting, some bushes not more than
3-4 sticks a yard high & some 10-12 foot high very full bushes &
crowns that are beginning to sucker a lot. As well there is quite a
lot size variation in the nuts. All my hazels & hazel crosses have
bits of eastern filbert blight, tho most of the susceptible varieties
died off long ago.

If you want to try yet another breeding program my neighbor Mark
Shepard has been working with some other genetics that I don't know a
lot about. His website is:
