Lee, I have a couple of attempts going now. My idea was to train one of the vigorous red ones up to form the base and graft my Hinnomaki Yellow to the top of the plant. Long term plan was to let some of the upper rootstock grow laterally on top, under the H. Yellow, so that the plant would produce both red and yellow fruit. I think H. Yellow (or other lateral gb's Whitesmith?) would be ideal for this.
I'm still developing the rootstock portions and recently learned that H. Yellow may still be under patent, so not sure how the whole project will work out. Among other things, I am a poor grafter, tending to cut myself with regularity when I attempt it. Was successful with apples years ago.
I've been focused on trying to graft my dying King Red Russian Olive to autumn olive rootstock (your excellent book mentions the problems keeping King Red alive), but so far none of the grafts have taken - don't know whether its my technique or an incompatibility. I think the King Red finally failed this fall.
Raintree sells standards of gooseberries from time to time.
