I find that the partly-compost small woodchips/sawdust I get from a stable
has a
surprising ability to stop moderate rains from getting through to the dirt.
I no
longer put it on my garden/berry beds, because if there are only slight or
moderate rains the dirt underneath stays dry. The chips/sawdust seems to
have
the capacity to absorb an awful lot of water. So now I wait for it to
decompose a
lot further.
