The younger the peach tree, the more susceptible
it is to freezing. Once a tree is 4 to 5 years old, it will endure below
zero temps better than a 1 year old, at least that was our experience. We
had about 600 trees that were over 12 years old that would endure -10 below, but
once we planted new trees to replace the old ones, we started to receive temps
down to -24 and most of the trees did not survive. Those on Bailey
rootstock did last longer...but we eventually took them all out. Most new
wood ( previous year growth) would freeze at -10 to -20 had to be pruned
off. But once it hit -24 for over 6 hours, the entire tree
froze. The real question is how long can a particular tree last at
sustained below zero temps. Sometimes it is more of a question as to
how many hours it is sub zero than how low the temp is. A tree may
endure -21 for 1 or 2 hours, but may not if it is -21 for 6 or 8
hours. Has anyone experimented with grafting scionwood from an older
tree that has survived sub zero temps to a cold hearty rootstock? Just a
thought!
