I have an ornamental cherry in my garden, a long
with a carmine jewel, a crimson passion and a second crimson passion I just
planted this spring. Every year my ornamental cherry just thrives and is covered
in a beautiful display of both blossoms and then foliage. My carmine
jewel too has been settling in very well over the last 2 years with lots of
flowers and fruit despite only being about 3 feet tall.
However, this spring both the ornamental and the
carmine jewel had hardly any blossoms. The carmine jewel has leafed out normally
but the ornamental has very few leaves. Many seem to be shrivelled or
malformed. On closer inspection I found that the ornamental has a vast number of
ants crawling on it, and on the branches, the terminal leaves are full of tiny
eggs, some grey-bown and some green. There also seems to be a small hole in the
trunk.
The other cherries have a few ants also and I found
some of the terminal leaves with the same type of eggs, but a much smaller
infestation.
I remember reading something someone had posted
about ants looking after aphids? I am assuming that the green eggs are aphids
but what are the brown? I get the impression this is killing the tree, and I
love my cherry! What do I need to do to get rid of these pests and save my
poor trees!
Any advice greatly appreciated!
