There are a number of sources of "black or extremely dark grey" moldy looking stuff which can show up on various fruiting plants (and likely other hardwoods).  An example is a heavy population of pear psylla leaves a black residue on fruit leaves and/or branches.  And sooty blotch can and is a pest on unsprayed pears.  Also many of the commonly used fungicides simply are not that effective on it

Jim if you are real curious why not send it a lab at U-MN.

Iv'e never seen sooty blotch on branches before, only on apples.  What Jim is talking about sounds like Black Rot, especially if it is forming at a pruned branch end and is travelling down the branch.  Usually your scab sprays will take care of any black rot.  Check out the article and photos at http://www.nysaes.cornell.edu/ent/scafolds/2000/4.3_disease.html to see if it is indeed black rot, then go to http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=Sooty+Blotch&sa=N&start=0&ndsp=18 and check out the photos of Sooty Blotch to compare with black rot.  Hope this helps!

Sooty Blotch.  I've seen it for years.  Not a problem on wood or at least I didn't experience any problems.

My neighbor has apple trees that look like they were blasted with a
black powder.  The "powder" is the thinnest at the point where a branch was
cut off and it gets denser farther on down the branch.  Now the same effect
is starting to show up on some of my trees.  so far, nothing else seems to
be amiss.  What might that be?
