Iv'e never seen sooty blotch on branches before,
only on apples. What Jim is talking about sounds like Black Rot,
especially if it is forming at a pruned branch end and is travelling down the
branch. Usually your scab sprays will take care of any black rot.

see if it is indeed black rot, then go to http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=Sooty+Blotch&sa=N&start=0&ndsp=18 and
check out the photos of Sooty Blotch to compare with black rot. Hope this
