My neighbor has apple trees that look like they were blasted with a black powder. The "powder" is the thinnest at the point where a branch was cut off and it gets denser farther on down the branch. Now the same effect is starting to show up on some of my trees. so far, nothing else seems to be amiss. What might that be?
