There is such a book and it could be at your library.
Back when I started gardening, I only knew of Gurneys and Farmers' Seed and Nursery. As a kid growing up, everyone I knew bought from those two so I did likewise even though the service and plants were disappointing. I figured, "There has got to be other nurseries to buy from." So I went to the library and the person at the reference desk provided me with a 3" thick volume that contains everything anyone might want to know about buying plants and who to buy from. I don't remember the name of it but your librarian might help you find it.
