Tina, Just two thoughts. What are the differences between the site for
the gooseberries and the site for the jostas? Is there any chance the jostas are in too much shade?
I have mine in full sun on the south side of the house where they also get
reflected light and heat from the neighbor’s driveway, etc.--not my choice
of sites, but that’s a different story. In addition, they’re
in unamended clay soil with poor drainage. This should’ve been a
really bad spot, but they’re fine and produce plenty. In contrast,
the same location just about killed the red currants. I would bet the
jostas need more sun/heat than gooseberries. They’re certainly
tolerant of it in my area. The only other thought was when/how are you pruning?
Jostaberries produce best on younger wood. If they’ve only been in
the ground three years, you shouldn’t have had to do much pruning. If you find out what was going on, I’m curious… let
me know! Michele in SW Ohio, zone 6a Sent: Tuesday, April 14,
