I cut up aluminum cans, folded the ends of the
strips and punched a hold through with a nail. Some of the labels I put on
citrus trees at my folks house are still there and readable about 14 years
later. I'm wanting permanent labels for a lot of pear grafts I plan to do,
a lot of topgrafting to speed fruiting. I thought I'd do the tin can thing
but rather than wire them to the tree I'd tie them on with hemp string.
I'd run wire through the hole in the metal, then string through the wire
loop. How long will hemp string last outside in the hot humid
weather?
I never thought about it, but
some of these topgrafts I plan to make, I could just scratch the name in the
bark below the graft. Might be readable for years to come.
Hard to change the "label" though if I change the graft again. Donna
