While you're making that 'permanent' label, make a second one, and rather than attaching it to the tree, bury it in the mulch/soil at the base of the tree - that way, when the deer eat or mangle the original, a windstorm blows it away, or the neighborhood wags steal 'em - or switch them around, you've still got a 'backup' way of recalling the ID. Choose a consistent spot - like the North or South side of the tree to bury the backup label.
An orchard map - with multiple copies maintained in separate locations - is a good idea, too.
