I don't know how widespread the trait is, but it seems like it should be fairly common as it makes sense from the plant's viewpoint. The thorniness of the juvenile stage would protect it from being browsed until it was tall enough to escape being cut down by animals.

Lon, that is fascinating! Do you know if pomegranates may act
similarly? My "Favorite" came back from a freeze event from the roots
but now suckers terribly and has thorns.
