Pear and apple seedlings go through a "juvenile" phase before they start bearing in which they frequently have thorns and may also have leaves with lobes rather than entire leaves. As the tree matures, the wood becomes thorn-free and trees grafted from the mature wood are usually free of thorns. However, grafting wood taken from areas of the tree close to the "juvenile" part may produce thorns, especially on vigorous new shoots. Your tree may have been grafted from such wood and the shock of the deer damage made the new shoots come out with thorns. Such juvenile shoots will grow out of the thorns, but they will also take longer t o come back to bearing than thornless shoots. Meanwhile, the thorns give them some deer protection.

Last year without any warning Crazed Deer attacked a small planting of our pampered 2 yo Asian pears. Emotionally beaten I did not return to the site of the raid until recently. Now one tree, a Hosui, which had its trunk snapped in two has multiple new shoots rising from just above the graft. Although the shoots are above the graft the new growth has what appears to be large thorns. I would like to know if I should choose one new shoot and cut the rest of the tree back or cut the new growth off and see if the old trunk will emerge ? I have taken a couple of pictures but didnt know if they would work with this reply. I could send off line.
Thank you, Anthony z4b
