This is interesting, but seems to be contradicted by the Herefordshire
Pomona that says:
Scarlet Pippin, Syn.: Bell's Scarlet Pippin, Bell's Scarlet, and others.
Introduced about 1800
Where there is a problem, however, is that this apple is in season from
October to January. So is surely not a summer apple... We could possibly
assume that there was another apples, relatively similar to this one but
ripening earlier, that was called Summer Scarlet.
